In the 1940s, a group of investors that included Roy Rogers built a movie set out in the desert near Joshua Tree. The movie set was the home to many films and television shows, and Gene Autry filmed many of his TV episodes at the town bowling alley. The town was dubbed Pioneertown.
These days, it is mostly a tourist stop for people driving through Yucca Valley. Although there area a couple of stores that operate out of the sets, the main attraction is a bar and music venue that was built into a set called Pappy and Harriet’s. Surprisingly, given the remote location, if you plan on having dinner here make sure to get reservations as they fill up fast!
